Suit colours for weddings: what to wear by day and by night

The colour of your suit says a lot about the kind of wedding. The right choice depends on the time of day, the season and your role. This guide helps you decide.

Daytime weddings

During the day, natural light favours lighter colours and soft tones.

  • Beige and cream — perfect for summer weddings at country estates or by the sea.
  • Light blue and baby blue — fresh and elegant, great with a white shirt.
  • Sage and mint green — a different choice that works beautifully outdoors.
  • Light grey — classic and easy to match.

Evening weddings

In the evening, dark colours take the spotlight and feel more formal.

  • Navy — the most versatile colour of all; it suits almost everyone.
  • Charcoal and black — sober and very elegant, especially as 3-piece suits.
  • Dark brown — a warmer alternative to black, great in autumn and winter.

Colours by season

Spring and summer: beige, cream, light blue, green, coral and linen suits.
Autumn and winter: brown, terracotta, dark green, olive, navy and subtle patterns such as check.

How to match shirt and tie

  • A white shirt works with any suit colour.
  • With light suits, choose ties in soft tones (beige, light blue, light green).
  • With dark suits, a plain tie in burgundy, blue or brown is always safe.
  • The pocket square should complement the tie, but doesn't need to be identical.

Colours to avoid

As a guest, avoid head-to-toe white — many families reserve it for the groom. And don't try to outshine the groom: if you know the colour he'll wear, choose a different one.
